Tech giants and telcos push generative AI

Last week, OpenAI introduced its newest and fastest model, GPT-4o, while Google announced that it has made improvements to its Gemini Pro 1.5 model and is working to infuse generative AI (genAI) into its search engine. Separately, there are reports that Apple and OpenAI are working on an agreement that would allow the upcoming iOS 18 to use genAI features. In the telecoms world, Bharti Airtel has struck a long-term partnership with Google Cloud to provide cloud solutions and genAI services to more than 1 million Indian enterprises.

Enhancing genAI capabilities to provide better services to consumers and businesses is a common theme across these developments. In the consumer market, GSMA Intelligence insights  show that the top three activities that consumers expect to benefit most from genAI include work-related activities, online information gathering and creative activities – these will certainly benefit from the innovations announced last week. It is also encouraging to see that operators are intensifying their efforts to leverage genAI for enterprise digital transformation, with Bharti Airtel aiming to accelerate the digital transformation of India through innovative enterprise solutions that combine the power of networks, cloud and AI technologies.
